Teaching Children Healthy Eating Through Play | Good For Kids

We love seeing ideas grow and come to life. This is why we are thrilled to do this follow up article on The World’s First Healthy Eating Doll by Good for Kids.

The doll and book were launched earlier this year and we get to review it on the #MelAndNikkiReview.

Let’s just recap a little about the concept behind this amazing toy and book.

Summer

Summer is the World’s First Healthy Eating Doll and she is adorable! She is a magnetic doll that can easily tell which foods are good for her. Summer comes with a set of 20 colorful, wooden toy foods and a cute shopping bag. Healthy foods like apples, carrots, tomatoes, blueberries and broccoli, stick to her mouth so she can “eat” them. If the doll is offered a lollipop however, she will not take it. The effect of tasting and touching the foods is accomplished through the use of hidden magnets, that are safely and inconspicuously embedded in the mouth and the hands of the doll. Summer can easily pick up healthy foods with her hands and bring them to her mouth. She really knows what’s good for her!

Healthy Foods Are Fun To Eat Book

This children’s picture book is filled with bouncy rhymes and gorgeous illustrations made entirely of fruits and veggies. It features food art created by over 10 talented artists from all around the world!

This book teaches children about healthy eating and you can combine the book with the doll in the learning experience.

#MelAndNikkiReview

We already fell in love with this product during their Kickstarter Campaign as we thought the concept was genius! Now we get to actually try it out for ourselves and our love for it has grown tremendously. It is such a great way to promote and encourage healthy eating. Nikki really got a kick out of the doll only picking up and “eating” the healthy foods. Nikki is still trying to figure out how Summer does it but we will keep that secret from her a little while longer. At the present time, we tell her that Summer is very smart and knows what’s good for her body and it works! 😉

The combination of Summer with the Healthy Foods Are Fun To Eat Book is fantastic! This children’s book is unique as it uses fruits and veggies to create the illustrations. Each page is breathtaking and it simply amazes me to see the art created with fruits and veggies. I think I need to up my mom game! 😉 You can use both the doll and book in teaching about healthy and unhealthy foods. Plus, the doll is so adorable that it is hard not to enjoy learning about different foods through her.

Therefore, for this #MelAndNikkiReview, we give this delightful duo of Summer and The Healthy Foods Are Fun To Eat, 10 strawberries out of 5! It promotes healthy eating in the most fun way and we love the combination of doll and book. We recommend this for children ages three and up. This would be great for schools to use with young children as it can be a great tool in teaching.

If you would like to purchase the combo pack which includes Summer and the book, click here. If you just want to purchase Summer or the book on its own, you have that option too. Just click here and select which one you would like. We recommend the package. 😉

7 Reasons Why I Love Girl’s Night

The day I became a mom, I knew that I would do everything and anything to be the best mom that I could be for her. From that day on, I spent many sleepless nights and days to make sure that she was very well taken care of. However, in the first three years, I was neglecting myself. During the transition into motherhood, I forgot about me as a person.

I thought that my job was to be with my child 24-7 and I shouldn’t think about having “me time.” I thought this would have been selfish (#momguilt) of me to even think that I deserved some time away as I should only focus on caring for my child. But soon I realized that I wasn’t good to anyone when I was feeling defeated and drained. I really needed some time away to re-focus and be me.

After a chat with a long-time friend who also expressed the same struggles, we thought we should launch our Girl’s Night. After convincing each other that we really did deserve it (amazing how strong mom guilt is), we were setting up our first girl’s night. Our girl’s nights are sometimes every other month or sometimes a little longer as it depends on life’s schedule; however, we always try not to delay it too much as we know how important this time is for our sanity.

That is exactly what we have been doing and we have even included more of our friends when they are able to come hang out for a bit. The Girl’s Night is one of my favorite events and I always look forward to it.

It is so important to care for yourself and much more as a mom. This is why I felt it would be great to share seven reasons why I love Girl’s Night and how it has made me a better person.

Relaxing

Just a couple of hours away from the home with your girlfriends is a relaxing experience and many times it is much needed. It gives you time to regroup and focus. Keep in mind that girl’s night doesn’t mean anything grand or expensive. A simple outing for a coffee is great idea as long as its an environment you can feel relaxed in. Just think that you don’t need to hide from little ones to enjoy some time to yourself! It is also great not to worry about having to assist anyone with their meals or even asking if anyone needs to use the washroom. 😉

You can even do other activities such as yoga or hitting the gym. The possibilities are limitless when you are planning a get together with your besties. 🙂  We have opted to do dinner as we have started a bucket list of restaurants that we want to try out! 🙂

*We may even launch a restaurant review section if our readers are up for it! Send us an email at mommabraga@gmail.com and let us know which ones we should try in the Toronto and Mississauga area.

One of my favorite meals so far on girls night from The Rec Room at Square One.

Be Yourself (True Self)

This may not apply to everyone but it does for me. On Girl’s Night I can just be me. I don’t need to worry about the language that I use (I work in the construction field and therefore, I have picked up on a few fowl words). 😉 You can speak freely with no filter and you don’t have to worry about being judged. It feels great to let loose and be yourself as it makes the evening much more enjoyable.

We tend to forget the people we are after we become parents and that person should never be forgotten as it makes who we are.

You can even be a little silly and try out Snapchat without your child getting in the middle. 😉 Here is my sister and I.

Laughter

Now you can’t have a girl’s night and not have laughter. That is my favorite part as we get to talk about everything and anything. We always have a great laugh as there are no limits on what we can say since there are no listening ears of little ones. We also get to share stories from our past and present that always bring a few more laughs that were unexpected.

Did you know how much laughter is good for your soul? It truly is and it helps with any stress that you are feeling. I honestly love to laugh and love to make those around me laugh (even if it is making a foul out of myself). 😉

Support

Now even though your child isn’t with you on a girl’s night, it doesn’t mean you can’t use this time to talk about them. We don’t eliminate talking about our children during our girls night as sometimes we need that listening ear. Having that support in-person is so amazing and bouncing ideas off one another on any parent struggle is so helpful. We use the time to vent, support and just be there for one another.

Parenting is not easy and it is great to get the support outside the home. Mind you, girl’s night is not around child talk but we know that if we need to we can talk to one another about it. Our girl talks cover an array of topics that are important to us and we know we will be supported.

Self-Care

As moms we need to find the time to take care of ourselves. Girl’s night helps me with self-care as it helps me find my way back to my inner rock star that I am and allows me to let go of high expectations. The hardest part was to let go of mom guilt that many of us are encompassed with. I knew that having time for myself did not make me a bad mom and it was important for my self-care.

When we feel great about ourselves, we will be better people and moms at the end of the day. I didn’t realize how important my own self-care was until it took a toll on me. Now I am not last on the list of caring but at the same spot as my husband and daughter. We all come first and it has been much better for us all.

Reconnecting With Friends

Relationships are important to nourish as we take care of our relationships with our children and spouse. Our friendships are also important and we need to reconnect with them too.

Girl’s night is the opportunity to connect, laugh and grow friendships. Everyone needs a friend to talk, cry and laugh with and a night out is a reminder that they do exist! The best part is that you know they are true friends when you have been apart for months and as soon as you are together, you continue exactly where you left off at. That is the power of friendship! Even if it is just one friend, that is all that is needed. I always say quality over quantity.

Renewal of Appreciation

Spouse and child(ren) will have a renewal of appreciation for all that you do when you return. You will also feel the same way. It may only be a few hours away but that is just enough to freshen the mind and make the everyday whining okay again. That time away can make mom feel happy and that in turn will have everyone else feel happy. Who doesn’t like mom being happy?!

The appreciation when you return feels great as I am always greeted with lots of hugs and kisses from both my child and husband. It makes me feel great to know I was missed even if it was just for a short period of time. It is also great for children to see that it is ok for mom to be someone besides mom and that they have friends too. When I get ready to go out, my daughter always tells me how beautiful I look and that she hopes that I have a great time with my best friend. It always makes me feel great to hear it! We all love to feel appreciated in life.

My family.

Above all, girl’s night might only be once in awhile, but every mom deserves a girl’s night out whether they go for dinner or to see a play. It is a great reminder on how much fun being an adult really is.

Hope you are taking good care of yourselves moms and know that you are amazing in everything that you do! Let us throw away the mom guilt and remember to take care of mom as we deserve it.

Until next time…Happy Parenting!

5 Reasons Why Institut Montana Zugerberg Will Take Your Child Far

Institut Montana Zugerberg is a Swiss international day school and boarding school situated above the Zugerberg Mountain. It is one of the oldest boarding schools in Switzerland and has a longstanding history of offering academic excellence and shaping outstanding students. For instance, the CEO of Swatch, Nick Hayek, graduated from there as did John Kerry, former Senator and Secretary of State to the United States of America. But just why does Institut Montana Zugerberg bring up successful individuals? I have five reasons why:

Language Learning

From the first moment your child steps foot on campus, they will be immersed in a multi-lingual environment. Most students will learn to be fluent in German and English by the time they graduate and they might even pick up French or further develop their native language if it’s not one of the former three. Numerous studies have shown that learning a second language or more can boost brain power as your brain has to cope with complexity and problem-solving. Your memory improves. It enhances your ability to multi-task, make decisions and it improves your first language. As a result, people who know a second language or more are known to have higher cognitive skills and in the end, are provided with better career choices.

Personal Care

With a 4:1 student staff ratio, your child will get to know their teacher on a very personal level. The average class size holds 10 students meaning that every student is noticed so they cannot hide or get left behind. This also encourages them to take part in discussion and further express their opinions. Various reasearch show that smaller classes also correlate with higher grades and better performance on university entrance exams. In the end, the classes form a close-knit community where teachers can offer better mentoring and one-on-one sessions with their students to improve their weaknesses and enhance their strengths.

International Community

Institut Montana Zugerberg is home to 300 students who represent over 40 nationalities. This allows for students to gain new perspectives and ideas and witness cultures and traditions that they may not have experienced otherwise. It’s common practice that during holiday or summer breaks, these students go visit their roommates or friends which tends to be in a country other than their own and they get to experience the country as a local. This international experience helps shape them to be global-minded citizens who are open-minded, tolerant and respectful.

Academic Programs

There are four schools that offer a tailor-made program for each student. Students can study there from the age of 6-19; going from elementary school all the way until the end of high school. Younger students study a bilingual elementary school that includes plenty of physical fitness afternoon programs so that you learn a new language and hobby at an early age. In high school, students can choose to either study at a Swiss-styled high school which ensures direct entry into a top Swiss university or go to the International School which offers both the US High School Diploma or the IB Diploma, both of which will help take your child where they want to go in the future for both their university destination and ideal career.

Switzerland

The land of cheese and mountains is also one of the safest countries in the world! What more could you as for? And don’t get me started on the abundance of chocolate, it’s basically paradise.

If your child is between 10-15 years old and looking to get a taste of this school and experience an unforgettable summer, then be sure to sign them up here and mention Momma Braga for a discount.

Tomato Soup | Recipe

A soup that my mom would make for us is tomato soup but it isn’t exactly what you think as we don’t actually use tomatoes. 😉

If you are looking for a simple and hearty soup recipe then this may be the one for you.

INGREDIENTS

  • Water
  • Tomato Paste
  • Salt
  • Olive Oil
  • Knorr of Chicken
  • Onions
  • Pasta (we usually use small pasta)
  • Potatoes
  • Boiled Chicken Breast (marinated with salt, black pepper and garlic powder)

DIRECTIONS

  • First clean the chicken breast and marinate it with some salt, black pepper and garlic powder. Once completed, boil it first until it is fully cooked.
  • Once chicken breast is cooked, remove it from the water. Shred the chicken breast into pieces to add into the soup afterwards.
  • In a new pot, add water for the soup. It is always best to almost fill to the top as water does decrease when boiled. Add a teaspoon of tomato paste, some salt, a dash of olive oil and knorr of chicken.
  • Clean and cut 2 onions into quarters and add to pot of water.
  • We also peel potatoes and cut them into small pieces to add into the soup.
  • Once all ingredients are added, turn the heat onto medium.
  • Stir as necessary and once potatoes are almost fully cooked, add the pasta and shredded chicken. Take a quick taste to see if additional salt needs to be added.
  • Once pasta is cooked, the soup is ready.

That is it! A simple recipe that is hearty and delicious! Enjoy!

Baked Garlic Lemon Salmon | Recipe

Growing up in a Portuguese household, it wasn’t uncommon to have a fish dish for dinner. However, the one type of fish my parents did not do was salmon. Only when I got older did I notice that salmon was often served at the special events that I would attend and after eating “one bad one.” It was a dish that I stayed away from but it was time to go back to salmon.

I researched for long hours trying to figure out what recipe was easy to follow for my first attempt at this dish. It was actually difficult to find a recipe that I could easily follow so I combined a few recipe steps together and made this Baked Garlic Lemon Salmon dish just in time to celebrate my mother-in-law’s birthday.

Baked Garlic Lemon Salmon

INGREDIENTS

  • Fresh bone-in salmon (They say bone-in but they do try to take out as many bones as they can. We were lucky not to get any bones in ours)
  • 8 garlic cloves chopped
  • 1 stick or 4 tbsp of butter
  • 1/4 cup of chopped green onions
  • 1/4 cup of Fresh Italian parsley
  • 1/4 cup of freshly-squeezed lemon
  • Salt and black pepper
  • 1/4 white wine

DIRECTIONS

  • Start by washing the salmon thoroughly and put it aside. You can also start the pre-heat process to 350.
  • In a pot, place the butter and wait until it melts and add all your chopped up garlic. Stir.
  • Once the garlic cooks a bit in the butter, remove from the top of the stove and place it on a trivet.
  • Then add the white wine and freshly-squeezed lemon to the pot. Then stir. Place aside.
  • Use a baking flat tray and cover it with tin foil (leave extra as you will be wrapping up the salmon in it). On the tin foil, spread butter so that the salmon doesn’t stick to it.
  • Once it is all covered, add your salmon.
  • With a spoon, add the sauce that was just made onto each salmon. Then with a brush, spread it on the whole salmon.

  • Then cover the salmon with tin foil and place it in the oven.
  • Time varies depending on how you want to have your salmon cooked and the type of oven you have. For me, it took 40 minutes to cook to perfection. *You can uncover the salmon 5 minutes prior to removing it from the oven.
  • Once cooked, remove from the oven and sprinkle the green onions and parsley over each salmon.
  • Then it is ready to serve!

This was an easy and simple recipe to follow and the end result was fantastic! I truly enjoyed eating this dish and I know I will be making it again soon. The best compliment anyone could get after you cook a meal, is when your guests ask to bring left overs home. This is how I know that I did a great job and had to share this recipe with all of you. Enjoy!

If you try this recipe, would love to hear from you. Leave a comment below. 🙂

Momma Braga’s Clam Stew

A very easy and simple recipe that my husband adores in our home is the Clam Stew. We like to do this meal every once in awhile and we love how simple it is.

Clam Stew

INGREDIENTS

  • 1/2 Onion
  • Olive Oil
  • Salt
  • Black Pepper
  • Paprika
  • Baby Clams (We love to use the Ferma Baby Clams)
  • Cup of water
  • 5 to 7 potatoes

DIRECTIONS

  • Start by washing the onions and potatoes. Chop up the onions and potatoes. Everyone has a preferred style for potatoes in their stew, we like it diced. Set the potatoes aside as you will need them later.
  • Once the onions are cut, place them in a pot with some olive oil with a pinch of paprika, salt and black pepper. On low heat cook the onion until the onions are a golden color. Then add your clams (including the liquid that is included in the canned clams), potatoes and one cup of water.
  • Let it cook on medium and stir.
  • Now cook until the potatoes are cooked and you are done. If a fork goes through the potatoes then that is my sign that they are done.
  • You can serve your clam stew in a bowl and if you like Portuguese buns, then provide some at the dinner table as they are great for dipping into the stew.

And there you have it, Momma Braga’s clam stew! Give it a try and let me know what you think of it!

Zucchini Lasagna Recipe

Lately we have been trying to make better eating choices and this meant eliminating some traditional dishes. We haven’t had cheese in a very long time and wanted to have it for a special dish. After some lengthy research and discussions with friends, we realized how zucchini can be used as a substitution for pasta! This was one of the food items that I have eliminated from my eating lifestyle so I thought why not try a Zucchini Lasagna!

I took my traditional Lasagna recipe and changed it a bit to accommodate the Zucchini and another veggie too! 😉

Zucchini Lasagna

INGREDIENTS

  • Ground Chicken (or Ground Turkey or Ground Beef)
  • 1 Onion
  • Half of a tomato
  • Olive Oil
  • 5 Zucchinis
  • Shredded Mozzarella Cheese
  • Tomato Sauce
  • Salt
  • Black Pepper
  • Garlic Powder
  • Paprika
  • 4 Tablespoons of red wine

DIRECTIONS

  • Marinate your meat (which ever one you prefer to do. We love the ground turkey as it is much lighter) prior to cooking. I usually do this the night before to have the meat soak in the juices for more flavor.
    • Wash meat well.
    • Place meat in a bowl and add the following ingredients; salt, black pepper, garlic powder, paprika, 4 teaspoons of red wine (the wine added is what sets this recipe apart from many). Measurements for the ingredients are based on what you normally use in your meat marinating.
    • Leave the meat covered and in the fridge for the next day cooking.
  • The following day you can start cutting up your onions and tomato.
  • Once the onions and tomato are cut, place them in a pan with some olive oil. On low heat cook the onion and tomato until the onions are a golden color. Then add your meat.
  • With ground meat you will need to keep breaking it apart and stirring it to ensure it gets cooked. Once the meat is cooked remove it from the pan with a slotted spoon to ensure that the olive oil is drained.
  • Place the ground meat in a bowl and mix some tomato sauce.
  • Next step is prepping the zucchini, chesses and veggies.

  • Then the layering begins. Start with some tomato sauce and spread to cover the bottom of the lasagna tray. Layer with zucchini slices, tomato sauce, ground meat, bell peppers and mozzarella cheese. Continue layering until all ingredients are used, reserve 1/2 cup of mozzarella cheese for the top of the lasagna. *Tip: Use cheese on the first layer and the layer before the very top.

  • Bake in preheated oven for approx. 45 minutes (or until the cheese is melted to your liking). Remove from oven, and let stand 10 to 15 minutes before serving. *Zucchini is a very moist vegetable and there may be a lot of juices after cooking it. Some recipes recommend to add more meat to soak up the juices but we didn’t as we loved it this way.

And there you have it, Zucchini lasagna! Give it a try and let me know what you think of it!

Until next time…Happy Parenting!

The World’s First Healthy Eating Doll

We just love bringing new and exciting products to the attention of our readers especially when they have an impactful meaning. We were so intrigued when Dessi, the founder of Good For Kids connected with us to let us know about her Kickstarter Campaign which launches on May 8th, 2018.

Without further ado, we are delighted to introduce you all to The World’s First Healthy Eating Doll and Children’s picture book, Healthy Foods Are Fun To Eat. We got the first exclusive interview with Dessi and we are excited to share it!

  1. Tell me a little bit about yourself.

I am a big dreamer and a mom to two amazing girls. I am also the Founder of GOOD FOR KIDS, a socially responsible start-up dedicated to launching products that are good for kids. Several years ago, I came up with the idea of creating a healthy eating toy and book that can inspire children to make healthy food choices. As a mom, I’ve struggled to keep my kids away from sugary junk and to get them to eat more fruits and veggies, so I decided to turn my idea into reality. Over the last year, I put an enormous amount of effort and passion into creating “The World’s First Healthy Eating Doll” and writing an adorable healthy eating picture book. I am delighted that both the toy and the book are now ready to share with the world!

  1. How is your product going to inspire healthy eating? How will it work?

The idea behind the Healthy Eating Doll and the book is to introduce children to the concept of making smart food choices. Reading and imaginative play are two of the most formative forces in childhood and they provide a great opportunity to teach children about health and good nutrition in a simple, fun and unobtrusive way.

Summer, “The World’s First Healthy Eating Doll”, is a smart magnetic doll that can easily tell which foods are good for her. She comes with a set of 20 colorful, wooden toy foods and a cute shopping bag. Healthy foods like apples, carrots, tomatoes, blueberries and broccoli stick to her mouth so she can “eat” them.

My children’s picture book “Healthy Foods Are Fun to Eat” is also a lot of fun. The book is filled with bouncy rhymes and gorgeous illustrations made entirely of fruits and veggies. It features food art created by over 10 talented artists from all around the world! We custom-printed one SUPER large copy of the book which is now the largest known healthy eating picture book in the world😊 This special, gigantic copy will travel to libraries, schools and children’s museums to spread the positive message of healthy eating.

  1. What inspired you to come up with this idea?

I am a healthy eating enthusiast and I have always looked for ways to get my children to love and appreciate wholesome foods. Unfortunately, it’s not always that easy. We live in a world filled with countless unhealthy temptations that even grown-ups like me find difficult to resist.

I came up with the idea for the healthy eating doll and book when I saw a girl sharing a real apple with her doll and saying: “Here, eat this. It’s good for you!” It was so refreshing to see how this little mommy wanted the best for her “child”. We all want our kids to grow up happy and healthy and this beautiful experience inspired me to create the educational toy and book.

  1. Tell me a little bit about your Kickstarter Campaign and how people can help.

Right now, the doll and the book are available to pre-order on Kickstarter and I would be thrilled if you could check them out. It’s a boundless sea of information out there and Kickstarter is an all-or-nothing fundraising platform (you only get funded if you reach your minimum fundraising goal). If you like the idea PLEASE support on Kickstarter and share, share, share to help me bring this project to life!

  1. Is there anything else that you would like to add for our readers about your company?

Thank you so much for asking! We are a tiny start-up and this is our first product launch. The long-term vision is to develop the company as a specialty children’s brand dedicated to bringing great products to the market, while at the same time giving back to children in need. Our GOOD FOR KIDS business-social formula for success is simple: Good Products for a Good Cause, and we hope that we can make a positive impact on raising a happy and healthy new generation.

We just love this idea and we honestly think the design of the doll and book are adorable!

Children do mimic what they see and if the doll is eating healthy, it can definitely be a great motivator for them to eat healthy too. I know that my daughter got excited when she saw the doll’s photo as I wrote this piece and started to ask if she could get one. When I explained how the doll works, she was even more excited and told me that she wants to eat healthy too. I have to say this is a great start and she doesn’t even have the doll at hand yet! Therefore, this gets our stamp of approval!

If you would like to support the Kickstarter campaign, make sure to visit them here. Also follow them along on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Pinterest.

We would like to give a special thank you to Dessi for giving us at Momma Braga the first exclusive interview on her great product!

Until next time…Happy Parenting!
