An Amazing Toy Center For Little Ones | Product Review

We appreciate toys that offer more than just bells and whistles. 😉 We love the toys that bring loads of fun and learning. This is why we love the toys from LeapFrog as they ensure their toys encompass all that and more.

We are delighted to share an amazing new toy that will have your little one learning in leaps! We called on my goddaughter, Adriana for her baby expertise to help us with this review.

Little Office Learning Center

Imagine a mini version of your office desk that fits for your little one. That is exactly what the Little Office Learning Center is. The major difference is that this interactive desk is fun!

The Little Office Learning Center includes eight role-play activities including a globe, laptop, clock, book, phone, piano keys, desk lamp and storage.

Product Features

As we mentioned the Little Office Learning Center offers eight features and we will break them down for you as you will be able to see it offers so much for your little one.

It also offers three play modes which are explore mode, learn mode or music mode.

Light-Up Globe

Spin the Light-Up Globe (middle of  the learning center) to explore music and greetings from around the world and hear phrases with light-up color effects.

Light-Up Crayon Piano Keys

Press the Light-Up Crayon Piano Keys to hear color names or musical notes. In Learn Mode, occasionally Scout will ask you to look for another feature on the table in that color to practice listening comprehension.

Clock

Rotate the Clock hand to hear time of day, daily routines, fun clock sounds and music.

Detachable Phone

Pick up the Detachable Phone and shake it to rattle the beads. Press the number pad or call button on the table for role-play fun.

Storage Tray

Flip the Storage Tray lid open and closed to practice fine motor skills. Place items in the storage tray for hide and reveal fun.

Book Page

Turn the Book Page to hear learning songs about the alphabet and emotions, melodies and phrases.

Light-Up Lamp Switch

Slide the Light-Up Lamp Switch to turn the lamp on and off and hear opposites, phrases and fun musical sounds.

Light-Up Laptop Screen and Shape Buttons

Press the three Shape Buttons to light-up and reveal hidden animal friends in the mirrored screen and hear shape, color and animal names.

#MelAndNikkiReview

The Little Office Learning Center is ideal for babies six to 36 months and this is why for this #MelAndNikkiReview we got our adorable goddaughter, Adriana, to help us out. 😉

As soon as I introduced her to LeapFrog’s Little Office Learning Center, her eyes just lite up! Adriana was so excited to give it a try. We used the Little Office Learning Centre in the standing up position as she loves to stand up. That is a feature that we love about this toy as it gives you the option to have it on the floor or in a standing up position. It’s great as it literally grows with your child. 😉

Adriana loved every activity on the Little Office Learning Center. However, if we had to pick her top three features it would be:  The Light-Up Globe, Light-Up Crayon Piano Keys and Detachable Phone. The activities are all educational from learning colors; shapes and so much more. It also helps build your little one’s fine motor skills which we love the best about this toy.

For parents who are concerned about “noise” as we all know how much toys can make, this toy has a feature to adjust the volume. #ParentWin

For all the reasons above, we give the Little Office Learning Center 5+++ Globes out of 5! We know that Adriana will continue loving this toy for months to come. In fact, she loves playing with it so much that she even gives her grandpa lessons on how it works!

We know the Little Office Learning Center would be a hit for all the little ones on your holiday list. If you would like to know where to purchase one, click here.

Supportive Parenting: Your Child Wants to Take a Year Off College And Go Abroad

Written By: Claire Adams

Before we begin, we need to answer the age-old question – what constitutes a supportive parent?

First of all, a supportive parent is one that encourages their child in their academic pursuits as well as their hobbies. Their other task is to be there, listen without judgement and try to put themselves in their child’s shoes, particularly during those turbulent teenage years. This one is difficult, but vital, as kids tend to drift apart from their parents at this age and you need to show them that you are there unconditionally. Don’t judge their mistakes or write off their goals and dreams as unreachable – acknowledge that you may not have all the answers and don’t underestimate your child’s wisdom. Finally, if you want them to act like adults, you need to treat them as adults.

Why is this all important? Because children who feel support and encouragement tend to make better choices and grow up to be independent, responsible and successful. Now, every parent wants to see their child successful, finishing college, finding a lucrative career – that’s a given. This is exactly why many parents struggle to understand when their kid comes to tell them they want to take a year off from college, whether in the middle of their studies or before going to grad school. That, let’s call it ‘a gap’, isn’t something you’ll be thrilled with, but let’s consider some of the reasons this might actually be great for their personal and professional development.

Immersion in other cultures

When you go abroad and you mix with locals with a completely different language and a set of religious and every other beliefs, it simply makes you a better person.

You may have taught your child to be tolerant, understanding and free of any form of prejudice and stereotypes, but there is absolutely no better way to raise a great person, a worldly one if you want, unless you let them spread their wings and explore everything the world has to offer. Each culture can teach you a different thing, instil a different great quality in you, and give you life lessons that will last forever. By letting your kid fly, you are giving them the chance to be better in every sense of the word.

It teaches them independence

Let’s admit it. While in college, your kid isn’t truly independent. They can always count on you to send a care package, a little extra money, and they live comfortably, whether in a dorm or private housing. Yes, being a little far away from you gives them a taste of independence, but going abroad will teach them so much more. They will have to work for a living, find their own apartment, pay their bills – simply put, pay their dues. That makes a person resilient and more capable.

As a result, when they come back, they will be this whole new amazing and improved person you will be even more proud of. And worry not, there are tons of ways for them to make a living and perhaps even develop new skills. For instance, if they decide to go to China, they can always make a living by putting their native English skills to use and become a teacher at such amazing schools as Monkey Tree ESL. The one thing a native English speaker can always rely on is a teaching job abroad, so don’t you worry about them making it on their own.

They will learn the value of money

They say you don’t know the value of money until you begin to make your own. Having to pay bills, take care of food, or buy clothes will be an amazing lesson on how to save, to be economical and frugal. They will even become more grateful for all the years and money you’ve invested in their education, and perhaps even continue to work part-time when they come back home, as a way of taking a part of the burden off of you, and to also retain that newfound sense of independence.

You may not believe that a year off is a great idea, and that’s your natural, parenting instinct speaking. You want your child to be safe, not to go without, and most importantly, to go back and finish college or get their Master’s degree. However, you have to believe that you have raised a great and responsible person, and that this year off will only fortify these qualities and make them an even better, more competent and more qualified person. A person with a new sense of direction. A real goal-getter. There will always be concerns, but if you’ve done your job right, you will have very little to worry about.

Eleanor Wyatt Princess and Pirate | Book Review

Empowering little girls to be who they want to be is a message that we love in our household. Especially since we are raising a little girl of our own. We believe that it is best for children to know that they can be whatever they want to be. This is why we are in LOVE with this book that we will be introducing all of you to.

Eleanor Wyatt Princess and Pirate, written by Rachael MacFarlane and illustrated by Spencer Laudiero the book you will want in your reading line-up!

Synopsis

“Her name is Eleanor Wyatt, and some days she’s a princess, some days she’s a pirate. Eleanor’s parents have taught her she can be anything she wants to be, from a ninja to a cowgirl to a fairy with wings. She can even star in her own book! Join Eleanor and her friends as they romp through tea parties and sword fights to discover the best treasure of all – being yourself!”

#MelAndNikkiReview

To say that we loved the book, would be an underestimate of the year! Eleanor Wyatt Princess and Pirate is a must read for every child as it is empowering. The message is loud and clear – you can be anything! Nikki loved it and felt that she could relate. One day she is fighting crime as a Superhero or she is playing princess with her toys. Either way she is herself and we wouldn’t want it any other way. Our favorite is that “there’s no right or wrong way to play.” YES! YES! YES! We love that message as there is no room for “gender” type play as we can be anything.

Overall the story flowed easily and the illustrations are captivating with the colors and characters. This is why for this review we give this book 5+++ stars out of 5! It is an empowering story that instills great confidence in being who you want to be and that is why this book is on our most recommended list!

“Let your inner light shine, and be who you are. Let your friends do the same, and you’ll shine like a star!”

This wonderful book will be available on November 6, 2018. If you would like to purchase your own copy, click here.

Unicorn Oo is an adorable adventure about a unicorn and all his friends. The main character of the story is your child; therefore, Nikki was the star of our book. Nikki was transported into this magical world to help Unicorn Oo and his friends stop a sorcerer from casting spells to make the weather bad. During their journey they help their friends and they teach the sorcerer the power of friendship.

#MelAndNikkiReview

Unicorn Oo has been a reading favorite ever since it arrived in our home. Nikki was thrilled to see her picture in the book and was excited to hear that she was the brave lead in the story. We loved the storyline and the message about kindness and friendship. Such important messages for our children to learn and Nikki loved that she was the one saving the day. One of Nikki’s favorite parts was singing Unicorn Oo’s special song.

“Clip – clop – Oo! Clippety – clop – Oo!”

The illustrations are beautifully hand drawned which to us makes it extra special. Unicorn Oo by Bang on Books encompasses all that we love in a book: personalization, great adventure, positive messaging and captivating illustrations. This is why we give Unicorn Oo, 5 clippety – clops out of 5!

So we at Momma Braga had to take part as we love kindness and crafts! The SMMs gave us all the tools that we needed to make a very special craft, a Kindness Cloud.

We are delighted to share with all of our amazing readers on how to make this very simple and thoughtful craft to be given to a special family member or friend.

DIY Kindness Cloud Craft

What You’ll Need
  • 1 Cloud (pre-cut)
  • 6 Strips of construction paper (pre-cut)
  • Marker
  • Frame
  • Glitter
  • Glue Stick

Craft Steps
  1. Pick a family or friend you want to spread kindness to and think about the things you love about them. Write their name in the cloud followed by “__________ is amazing because he/she is…”
  2. Write a word on each piece of coloured construction paper that describes your friend (i.e. giving, funny, kind, etc.). Be sure to leave room at the top of each piece for glue.
  3. Flip the cloud over so the written side is facing down. Place glue on the top of the written side of each coloured strip.
  4. Please the coloured strips on the cloud with the written side facing down and place the colours in order from left to right. Let the glue dry for five minutes and then flip your card over to reveal your beautiful craft!
  5. Once the cloud and rainbow strips are glued together secure the craft to the inside of the frame.
  6. Once your craft is finished, give it to your family or friend and remember to spread kindness wherever you go! Make sure to upload a picture to social media using the #MightyMakerMovement tag and show us how your spreading kindness in your community!

Nikki picked her baby cousin Adriana as she loves her dearly and thought what a great keepsake for her little cousin. Nikki told me that you are never too young to learn and teach kindness (heart melting at the moment).

8-month old Adriana is the recipient of the Kindness Cloud.

The craft is so creative and adorable to do! We had a blast making it together and gets us excited to tune in to the Super Mighty Makers on tvoKids on November 3rd and onward. I Survived My First Week Of Kindgarten

She held my hand excitedly with her backpack on her back and ready to conquer Kindergarten. “I am so excited for school. I have been waiting so long to go,” exclaimed Nikki. I took a deep breath and knew it was time to let go a little more.

After months of preparing myself mentally and physically for the beginning of Nikki’s first day and week of school. It appears that the heart still pulls all the weight no matter how much we think we are ready. I re-lived those sleepless nights with the anticipation of Nikki starting school. It all came down to this one day and wondering how Nikki will do.

So many questions went running through my head like will she make friends? Will she adjust? Will she cry?

First Day

When the day finally arrived. Nikki woke up excited that it was her first day of school. We started our morning routine and we made sure to take those first day photos with her beautiful poster designed by ID Inspired Designs. We packed her lunch and were ready to start her school day.

We arrived early and walked to school together (while I was holding her hand tightly). As we walked, Nikki kept telling me how happy and excited she was. She went on to tell me that she is going to learn so much and grow. At this point I started to feel that lump in your throat when you are about to cry. I stopped myself and said, “You have to be strong! Don’t let her see you cry!”

We went inside the classroom and the teacher directed us to find a cubby. As Nikki hung her jacket and bag, I realized that I have an independent young lady and could not have been more proud.

At this point it was time to sit at the carpet to start the day. Without hesitation, Nikki went on her way. I approached Nikki and I wished her a magical day and told her how much I loved her. Nikki turned to me and said, “Ok mom. Bye. I’m ok. You can go now.”

Cue Waterfalls

As I walked to my car wiping the little tears that were making their way down. I started to think about that very first day that she was born. I remember the doctor placing her on my chest and with her curious eyes looking up at me as if she was reconfirming that I was her mother. I looked down at her and said, “Welcome to the world Nikki. We have been waiting a really long time for you. I promise that I will always be there to protect you.” But how can I keep that promise when I have released her into the world of school?

By the time I got to my car, there were no more tears but waterfalls at this point. I lost control of the overwhelming emotions that I worked so hard to contain. But I couldn’t as I remembered how hard it was to conceive her after my miscarriage and how grateful we were to finally hold her in our arms. I wasn’t ready to let go no matter how much I said I was. However, the tears were the release that I needed to reassure me that she was going to be ok. My tears were a lot better than having her tears on this first special day. She was ready to let me go and that I am grateful for.

The rest of the day I watched my clock to see when it was time to pick her up again. I couldn’t wait to see her and hug her and ask how her day went.

End of First Day

I waited patiently outside to see my child’s glowing face coming out from the classroom. Nikki came out with the same excited smile that she went in with that day and I knew it was a success! She had a great day and that was all that mattered to me at that moment.

First Full Week

Luckily the first full week of school had no tears from either party and each day was enjoyed as Nikki asked to go back to school. This made the mornings much easier to cope with. What we did find is that afterschool was harder as Nikki would be very tired from the long day. Some days she would squeeze in a little power nap which helped her the rest of the evening until bedtime. The days that a nap wasn’t a possibility made it a little more difficult for all of us as cranky would be her middle name. But this is the adjustment and transition phase which we hope is just a phase. However, the silver lining is that she is enjoying the daily stimulation of school and all that needs to be learned.

Stay Organized with Mabel’s Label’s Personalize School Labels

We always take it one day and week at a time with adjusting along the way. It seems that we do a lot of that in this journey we call parenthood.

As we just completed the second week I realized something from the first day. Maybe my promise hasn’t been broken to protect her. By raising her to protect herself when I am not there is the best way to keep my promise to her….At the end of the day, I am just happy to say that I survived my first week of Kindergarten!

Until next time…Happy Parenting!

How to Turn Your Family Office into a Homework Area

Written By: Claire Adams

All parents want their kids to do well in school. For that, you need to provide them with a bit of help, a lot of support and a practical area for schoolwork. Sure, sending your child to their room to do homework is the traditional way to handle the situation, but is that really the best? Well, just as you have a designated room for your “homework” (usually a home office), your kids will also benefit from a space like that. So, how can you design a family office to welcome your kids?

Safety first

If you’re planning to share your office with your first-grader, you must child-proof your shared space. Kids at that age are super curious, and even though they understand what they can and can’t touch, they are often unable to resist the temptation. Make sure to keep your staplers, letter openers and other potentially dangerous items in drawers and safely secure all heavy items on shelves. If there are many cords winding around your office, get cheap cord organizers that will prevent trips.  You don’t want to see your kid getting hurt nor your laptop flying from your desk!

Make it fun

Adults might thrive in minimalist spaces, but kids will simply hate them! There’s no way your child will love his or her new study area if it’s decorated like a cubicle. So, make sure to fill their little corner with color and decorate it in a fun and inspiring way. Of course, that doesn’t mean you must go all-in! Pick a few complementary shades, put up some wall decoration and make it generally fun and pleasant. Organize a little DIY shop, so you can create decorations together and spruce up the space. Your kid will naturally gravitate towards the area, even when they don’t have homework!

Light it up

Homework is still mainly done on paper and involves plenty of physical books, so you need to light up your space! The best way to provide your kid with appropriate lighting is to get a good desk lamp for evening homework sessions. But, if you can provide your kid with natural lighting, go ahead and place their desk near the window to let the sunshine in. After all, natural lighting is still the best and healthiest way to illuminate a homework area.

Equip it for the win

It goes without saying that you’ll equip your kid’s homework area with an ergonomic desk and chair, but there’s more to successful homework-doing than that! Colorful highlighters, crayons, rulers and post-it notes are all essential for fun and fast schoolwork. If you have older kids, you need to provide them with more serious office material and tools. Check out the Winc stationery range and you’ll find everything your kid might ever need, from paper clips and scissors to calculators and batteries. Homework has never been this easy, fast and fun!

Boost health

Offices are known to get pretty stuffy from all the electronics, so air purification and proper ventilation are a must! Luckily, there are great air purifiers on the market today which keep your indoor air free of dust, pollen, mold, dander and even some nasty odors! Combine them with a few plants and you’ll have a clean and healthy office and homework area. Also, make sure to keep your office warm. Adults are much less sensitive to cold than kids, so don’t forget to provide your space with some heating. A portable heater is a great option, as long as it has a safety switch, cool surface temperatures and a safety grate around the fan.

Sharing a home office with your little scholar will not only give you an opportunity to monitor their work, but also allow you to provide them with help, support and motivation to keep up the good work!

The Tutu Experience | Petit Tutu Boutique

Tutus is the fashion must with our daughter as she adores them. This is why for her birthday this year we had to find the perfect one for her Wonder Woman theme and for her four year old photo. Every year we take pictures of Nikki to celebrate her big day and we give a photo to our close family and friends. We love doing this as it allows us to see how much she has grown over a year.

So the search was on for the best Wonder Woman costume that we could find. After tirelessly searching through Google, we came across the ONE that we have been waiting for!

We came across Petit Tutu Boutique on Etsy and they had the perfect outfit for our Wonder Woman themed photoshoot and birthday party.

The reviews looked good and the photos of the quality of work that was completed looked amazing. There were so many other designs and themes that were adorable too but we had to focus on Wonder Woman.

We first sent an email to the owner, Nancy, as we were on a tight deadline and we wanted to make sure they delivered to Canada. Nancy got back to us promptly and informed us that Canadian shipments are done but that the deadline might not be met due to the distance. We understood this completely and we didn’t mind at all as we had some time until Nikki’s birthday but we wouldn’t be able to take the photos the day that we scheduled. No big deal since we do the photos ourselves. 🙂

We promptly ordered the complete outfit which includes the tutu, the top, wristbands and headband. We also received the Wonder Woman Shoe Embellishment which was super cool! Within a week we received our order and to me it looked even better than the photos that I saw online. Both Nikki and I feel in love with it instantly. Now when we order from small shops and the items are handmade we take a deeper interest in them.

We wanted to find our a little bit more about Petit Tutu Boutique so we got the inside scope from the owner, Nancy on her business.

Exclusive Mini Interview

When did you start your business, Petit Tutu Boutique?

I opened up shop in 2007 on eBay and then made the switch over to Etsy in 2011. It’s been wonderful!

What inspired you to start your business?

I am a stay-at-home mom and I would make costumes for my children. From there it took a life of its own and people started making costume requests for their children. It was a really nice way to start off and bring in some extra money to our household.

What type of products do you offer?

I make Birthday outfits and costumes, mostly for little girls but I have done some for boys as well. You can check out the collection that is available on my Etsy page.

How can people order your beautiful designs?

My shop is only available on Etsy right now and if there are any questions, anyone can email me directly on the site.

#MelAndNikkiReview on Petit Tutu Boutique

We received exceptional service and quality. It made my Super Nikki’s day as she adored the outfit and insisted on wearing it almost everyday before her big day. It made her fourth birthday extra special and she matched Wonder Woman who made an appearance on her special day. Nikki’s birthday has now passed and she still wears her costume proudly. It gets tons of compliments which makes Nikki feel extra special. We give Petit Tutu Boutique 5+++ stars out of 5! Important tip for residents in the USA, if you have a rush order request, you can select the option for “Rush My Order” at an additional cost to your order.

The quality and professionalism was great from start to finish. We are already thinking of what tutu we want next. 😉 Make sure to follow them on Facebook too!

Special thank you to Nancy of Petit Tutu Boutique for making a little girl’s wish to be Wonder Woman come true and in style!

Until next time…Happy Parenting!
