Celebrating the Season with Santa and Aqua-Tots Swim Schools

The spirit of the holiday season came alive with a splash this past weekend at Aqua-Tots Swim School in Burlington. The Swim with Santa Event is one of the many perks offered with your membership at Aqua-Tots and we love it!

The event brings families together as they embrace fun-filled activities such as crafts, holiday story corner, photos with Santa and of course the famous Swim with Santa.

Holiday Crafts

The holiday season is a great time to embrace and share our crafting skills. This was one of Nikki’s favourite activities as she had so many different craft options to do. Her favourite was making tree ornaments which she opted to bring all home with her to place on our tree.

Nikki also made a festive bracelet that she wore proudly at the Swim with Santa Event. It was hard to get Nikki to a different section as lots of fun was had at the craft table.

Holiday Story Corner

Another favourite activity for Nikki was the holiday story corner. She absolutely loved all the holiday stories and loved to interact with the story teller. Ask a question and Nikki will be the first to respond.

Who doesn’t love a good holiday story, right?!

Photos with Santa

Santa came by to say hello to all the amazing swimmers prior to stepping into the pool. Everyone had a chance to sit on Santa’s lap to take a photo and tell him what they would like for Christmas or share a Christmas wish.

We loved the set up of Santa’s photo area and there was even a box by his side for any Santa letters. Nikki really loved the set up and wanted a photo of herself in Santa’s spot. I guess she wanted to be Santa for a bit while he was getting ready for his swim.

Swim with Santa

Santa came by the pool area and dipped his feet to interact with all the excited children around him. This part is the highlight of the event as everyone is always excited to see Santa in a different type of element such as the swimming pool.

This part is one of my favourite parts too as you see families swim together. Everyone always has so much fun and you see how proud the children are to show their parents the amazing swimming skills they have learned.

Overall, we always have a great time at all the special events that are hosted by Aqua-Tots Swim Schools. We love this perk as it provides an opportunity to get together as a family and as a community. It truly embodies the spirit of the season and it continues on throughout the year.

If you are looking for the perfect Christmas gift this year, think about the gift of swimming. Gift certificates are available. Just give them a call to get set up. Remember that these events are available to you for free with your membership.

Build, refine and stay sharp all year-round with Aqua-Tots. Make sure to check them out at the Mississauga or Burlington locations to get started.

Until next time…Just keep swimming! 😉

‘Tis Always The Swim Season

Swimming is more than splashing with your friends on a hot summer day. Children can reap many rewards from taking swimming lessons year-round.

But don’t just take just our word on it. We went to the experts themselves at Aqua-Tots to see the overall benefits of swimming all year-round.

So, let’s jump in!

Many of us know the importance of swimming year-round; however, there are also many who do not. Give us your insight on:
The Development Benefits

Swimming involves a lot of visible physical components, but in addition to that it also involves a great deal of cognitive focus. For example, when swimming freestyle, you must coordinate your arms and legs to move simultaneously. When our students enter Level 10, we start to teach them breath control and “side breathing” which is an incremental area of focus layered onto the movement of limbs. Its multitasking at its finest!

The Physical Benefits

Swimming is great exercise for all ages. In fact, it uses multiple muscles in the body at the same time. It also helps to build strong muscles and endurance; skills which are transferable to other sports. Unlike other sports though, learning to swim year-round is a life skill that will help children stay safe in and around water over a lifetime!

Overall Benefits

In addition to moving your muscles, swimming, also gives your brain a workout with all of the multitasking you do with your body which in turn serves as a total mood booster. Achieving new skills, overcoming anxieties, and becoming independent in the water are all major confidence boosters! It also helps children stay active year-round, and supports key social developments for kiddos like listening, taking turns, verbal communication…all taking place in an environment where positive friendships can grow!

Swimming is a life skill that should be practiced all year long. It is one of the best skills to equip your child with this summer.

What tips can you give parents who may feel overwhelmed in adding an extracurricular activity during the school year?

Swimming is an individual sport, which allows children to progress at their own pace and provides a stress-free environment. Here at Aqua-Tots, there is no pressure to commit to specific days, as you might with other team sports. If outside commitments arise, Aqua-Tots has a flexible make-up policy to accommodate busy schedules, vacation time, and other extracurricular events.

Unlike other sports, swimming is a lifelong safety skill and therefore, it is critical for all individuals to feel confident and independent in the water. You never know when you might find yourself in or around water – even throughout winter (e.g. public pools, ice and open water during vacations). Finding a way to incorporate swimming into your schedule will not only help your child with the developmental and physical benefits of swimming, it will also give you piece of mind knowing your child will be that much safer when exposed to water.

Is there a specific time that works best for families when they have children in school? From your experience is there a time of the day that works best such as right after school or later in the day?

We know life with kids get busy, which is why being open weekdays and weekends allows families to have the flexibility to take swim lessons the day(s) that best suit individual family needs. Weekday morning lessons are ideal for new Moms with babies or toddlers because the serene and warm environment lends itself sets (remove sets) to bonding with little ones as well as connecting with other Moms.

Some caregivers find it’s a great activity for school age-children to do during the weekday evenings so they can go home and have a nice, restful sleep! Other families are just too busy during the weekdays and prefer to come in for lessons on either Saturday or Sunday. Regardless of your child’s age or swimming ability, our schedule is designed to offer all eight levels many times throughout the week, to ensure we are able to run classes for a four-month-old and a 12-year-old on the same day.

Aside from the swimming benefits aspect, can you tell us a bit about the community benefits? Tell us about the importance of creating a supportive community through your school.

We are all about family and community at Aqua-Tots. We pride ourselves in greeting your family every time you walk in the door. We also love getting involved in different community groups. You’ll always see us at different festivals and events in the Greater Toronto Area, such as Children’s Festivals and the annual Santa Claus Parade.

We also have several special events which we host free of charge for all members to celebrate milestones throughout the year. The Easter Bunny and Santa make an annual guest appearance at our schools…and the smiles on the kids faces are a priceless reward!

Lastly, registering your children in swimming lessons fosters positive, supportive relationships. We love seeing friendships form within our classes. A lot of parents become friends through their children’s lessons which is so fun to see. Stop on by, and be prepared to make some awesome new friends.

Anything else you would like to add to our amazing readers?

If you love your experience at Aqua-Tots you can always benefit from spreading the word! Refer a friend to our weekday morning classes and receive a $25 referral credit when your friends or family members sign up!

There you have it! ‘Tis always the swim season! Children can benefit greatly from year-round swim lessons from a safety and development standpoint. Incorporating swim lessons into your routine is an invaluable asset to your child’s mental and physical well-being.

Build, refine and stay sharp all year-round with Aqua-Tots. Make sure to check them out at the Mississauga or Burlington locations to get started.

Until next time…Just keep swimming! 😉

Start the Fall Season Right With Swim Club, Adult Lessons and Family Swims…Oh My!

The leaves are starting to turn colours, the air is getting crisp and the smell of Autumn is filling the air. All clear signs that Fall is soon upon us.

Now when we think of Fall, we rarely think of swimming but we would like to change that especially with the great new services offered at Aqua-Tots Swim Schools.

Here is what is new at Aqua-Tots Burlington.

New Swim Club

Make a splash in a new club this Fall! This service is open to swimmers in Level 7 and 8. Swim Club is a 30-minute program intended to help advanced swimmers with developing endurance and stamina. Students will have the opportunity to refine technique in all the major strokes as well as working on their flip turns while swimming the whole length of the pool!

This weekly Swim Club is an easy drop in on Tuesday from 8 PM to 8:30 PM and will be available on a pay per class basis. Swim Club is perfect for those swimmers aspiring to move into competitive swimming down the line.

New Adult Lessons

Who says only kids can learn how to swim?! It’s never too late to start! The one-on-one (private) adult swim lessons will include a personalized approach to every adult’s individual goals whether that be building basic comfort in the water or wanting to master the breaststroke, you now can with this new service.

These lessons will be offered in 30-minute segments on a pay per class basis. These classes will be available during lunch time every Thursday.

Family Swim

Fall and winter can be tough to get through especially when you have little ones at home that get the wiggles! As parents we want to help everyone in the family stay active heading into the cooler weather days. This is why Aqua-Tots is hosting 3 FREE Family Swims every week including: Wednesdays from 12 PM to 1 PM; and Saturdays and Sundays from 1 PM to 2 PM. These family swims are great for bonding with your wee ones and also a wonderful opportunity for older children to show off the swim skills they learn in class. The pool is 90 degrees which helps everyone stay warm and comfortable no matter what the weather is like outside.

There you have it! Three new amazing services that are being offered this Fall at Aqua-Tots in Burlington. You don’t want to miss out on the opportunity to join one or all of the new services.

As we have mentioned before on our blog, Aqua-Tots Swim Schools are great schools that truly teach the importance of water safety while still having fun. They provide a much-needed service to the communities they serve and I am truly grateful for them.

If you would like to learn more about these new services or how you can get your child enrolled in a swim program, please feel free to contact them at 905.331.3393 or send them an email at burlingtoninfo@aqua-tots.com. They will be splashing for joy when they hear from you!

One Life Lost is Too Many: National Drowning Prevention Week

“Drowning is the #1 cause of unintentional injury-related death among children ages 1 to 4 and the #2 cause for children up to 14.”

– Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

In Ontario alone, there has been 43 drowning deaths from January to July 15, 2019. It is a scary statistic and that is why it is important to address water safety all year round.

At Aqua-Tots Swim Schools, their primary purpose is to save lives by teaching children to swim and educating people about how to remain safe in and around the water. Recently, Aqua-Tots Swim Schools in Canada hosted a new event called, Swim with Your Clothes On to kick off National Drowning Prevention Week.

The Swim with Your Clothes On Event was an important and interactive 30-minute lesson for children. In addition, to understanding and practicing water safety, the children had an opportunity to experience what swimming with their clothes on would feel like if ever faced with an emergency. In this event, children were taught the importance of water safety, how to swim with their clothes on, and how to assist others who are in danger.

When we heard about the Swim with Your Clothes On event, we jumped at the opportunity to attend. We want to ensure that we take every step possible in teaching our daughter water safety. What we love about Aqua-Tots Swim Schools is these wonderful events are offered for free for families in the community who are members.

Event Exercises

On top of the wonderful swimming curriculum, there were a few exercises that pertained to water safety that we are honoured to share with our readers.

  • Children were taught to ask an adult for permission before going swimming and knowing the adult should go in first.
  • To turn on their backs/roll over and float on their backs if they fall in to get air, and while resting on their backs in the water call for help.
  • Lastly, “reach, throw and don’t go in” which taught children not to go in after someone has fallen into the water. Instead they were taught to lie on their bellies at the edge of the water (in this position you won’t fall in yourself) and throw a life saving device to the person in need to pull them in (e.g. rope, pool noodle, etc.) back to safety.

These exercises were well thought out and executed at this event and you could tell that the children were grasping the concept of drowning prevention. Nikki truly enjoyed each exercise but I could tell that she enjoyed saving her coach with the pool noodle the best.

Photo Credit: Natalia from Aqua-Tots Swim Schools Canada

On the way home, Nikki turned to me and said, “Mom, I can save you if you ever fall in the water. So, don’t you worry!” That sentence alone means that the event was a raving success in our books. To know that my child is confident enough with what she learned that she could save her mom is just perfect! Thank you, Aqua-Tots Swim Schools.

Aqua-Tots Swim Schools didn’t forget about the parents watching the lesson as they also provided us with a great idea and tip. We were provided with a “Water Watcher” lanyard that we can use when children are in the water. So, what exactly is this lanyard? The lanyard states: “While wearing this tag, I agree to supervise the children in the open water or pool, keeping them in sight at all times. I will not leave the water area without finding an adult to replace me.” Love, Love, Love this! I think everyone should adopt this concept as it could really prevent drownings. Since I have this lanyard, I will be taking it to any pool party that we are invited to – you have been warned family and friends.

Above all, this event was a great way to kick off National Drowning Prevention Week and to make sure that the conversation is happening around water safety.

Photo Credit: Natalia from Aqua-Tots Swim Schools

There are three ways that you can save lives too and these include: Enrolling in Swim Lessons; Supervising children in or around water; and spreading tips related to water safety awareness. This is what we can do as parents and as a community as drowning is silent and preventable.

Let’s stay safe in and around water. Until next time…Happy Parenting!

Spring Forward with Swimming Skills at Aqua-Tots Burlington

Many parents will agree that we are all just tired of Winter and are ready to embrace Spring with open arms. I know that I sure am!

Summer is not too far behind from Spring and many parents may start thinking of summer activities and vacation. These plans may often involve swimming or water so why not use Spring to get ahead and start or hone your child’s swimming skills? We took this question to the experts themselves to see the benefits of “Spring Training.”

We chatted with Nikki, General Manager at Aqua-Tots in Burlington to get the inside scope on having a child enrolled in multiple swim lessons per week.

Spring is in the air and that means Summer isn’t too far behind. What types of programs are available in the Spring to help children get ready for Summer?

We offer lessons 6 days a week here at Aqua-Tots! We usually recommend a 2 day-per-week plan for your child to really excel in their swimming. We see swimming as riding a bike – the more you practice the quicker you will learn. In addition to swim lessons, all of our members have access to our Family Swims every Sunday from 1 PM to 2 PM. Family swim is a great way for you to bring your children into the pool to practice skills they have learned in class, or just to have fun and splash around!

What are the benefits of taking multiple swim lessons per week?

There are many benefits to swimming multiple times per week – especially with Summer coming up! To name a few:

Muscle Memory

The more you practice a skill, the more your body begins to get comfortable and confident with the movements and it soon becomes second nature. Once you learn how to swim – it is impossible to forget, just like riding a bike!

Confidence

If you are looking to grow your child’s confidence around the water, exposing them to lessons multiple times per week will help them to understand the importance of lessons, it will also help them to gain trust with the instructor and the skills they are being taught in their class. When I first did a swimming lesson, I was eight years old! I felt nervous as I had never been in a structured swim setting. Once I realized I was capable of doing the skills the instructor was teaching, my confidence sky-rocketed and it became my passion. I went to become a Lifeguard and Swim Instructor and I cannot imagine my life without the pool.

Skill Progression

If you have your child enrolled in swimming lessons but feel as if they are reaching a plateau this is okay! Instead of taking a break from the lessons, this is a sign that it is time for more exposure to the water. By signing up for multiple lessons per week, you are giving your child more of a challenge and a new excitement for lessons.

Tell us a memorable moment of a child who has benefited from multiple swim lessons per week.

When we first opened here in Burlington, we had a student in our Level 3 Younger Leapfrog Class (2.5 years old) who was apprehensive about the water. During their first few lessons, she would cry for nearly the whole class only stopping when she knew it was time to go and see Mom at the end of class. As their parents grew concerned about whether or not they would able to overcome this obstacle, they decided to switch to a 2 day-per-week plan. What a difference 2 days-per-week made for this child! Within a week of the new plan, the once nervous swimmer was doing full submersions and completed many advanced skills. Now to this day, this swimmer comes into our facility with a big smile and can barely contain their excitement when Coach calls their name to enter the water.

What can parents do to help prepare their child for multiple swim lessons? For example, any worries they may have of the child being too tired.

There are a few things a parent can do to prep their children for multiple swim lessons. Here are a few we suggest:

Talk About It

Remember swimming is an essential life skill that your child absolutely needs to learn. As a parent, if you emphasize the importance of swimming, your child will grow to appreciate how special this skill is to daily life. Throughout the week, talk about how exciting it is that they get to swim at Aqua-Tots on Monday AND Wednesday now, for example. If they are with two different Coaches, talk about how fun it will be to see Coach A on Monday and then Coach B on Wednesday. If they are nervous to enter the water without you, remind them that “Mommy/Daddy watch swim class from the red chair and they come in the pool for Family Swim on Sunday.” Instead of saying “Mommy/Daddy forgot their bathing suit and cannot go in,” remind them of why you do not go in for lessons. Otherwise, they will have an expectation that you are allowed to go in for lessons.

Flexibility

We pride ourselves in our non-seasonal school and our ongoing schedule. You can utilize your 2 day-per-week plan in many ways. The first is a back-to-back lesson option. This is where you would have your child enrolled in two consecutive half hour lessons. If this is not an option for you, or you feel your child is too tired, try two different days of the week. For example, Tuesday evening and Saturday morning. When you’re in the water, you are invigorated by the splashing and the enthusiasm of the instructor! Your child might be a little tired AFTER their sim class but this is totally normal and a sign they worked hard and learned a lot in the water.

Family Swim

If you are still undecided about a multiple day-per-week plan, try to incorporate our Family Swim into your routine first. That way, you will be here once during the week for your lesson, and once for a Family Swim.

Any special promos for parents who want to take advantage of Spring time for more swim lessons?

This Spring we encourage everyone to take advantage of our Ollie the Otter package. Sign up for 5 months of swim lessons and receive your 6-month free, plus 10% off all retail and priority access to all special events. For maximum progression we also recommend that children swim multiple times a week and when upgrading your plan from 1 to 2 days per week or 2 days to 3 days, we provide a discount on the additional day being added!

Any other tips or advice you would like to provide to parents or children who want to be better swimmers?

The best piece of advice I would give to parents and children as a swim instructor and Lifeguard is to remember how important swimming is to daily life. There is so much water in the world and it is important to know how to swim not only for safety, but for individual confidence as well. Talk about how exciting the water is and make a big deal for every new swimming milestone. We say, “Turn Tears Into Cheers” – if your child does a submersion or gets the ring from the bottom of the pool, throw your hands in the air and cheer! This will show them that tackling your fears is something to be celebrated! Talk about how fun swimming is as much as you can and always try to provide your child with opportunity to take swimming lessons or come to a Family Swim.

Your child might not master all of the skills in their level within the first few weeks and that is totally normal. All it takes is continuous exposure and positive verbal reinforcement from parents/guardians and the coaches.

Always remember our Aqua-Tots motto, “Safety First, Fun Ever Second!” See you at the pool!

Special thank you to Nikki for taking the time to offer her expertise and we hope this information has enlighten you all to think about “Spring Training” with your little one for the upcoming water season.

We love Aqua-Tots Swim Schools as their programs and facilities are absolutely wonderful with families always in mind.

Aqua-Tots Swim Schools in Burlington Takes Swimming Lessons To The Next Level

The roads were covered with snow and the temperature was below freezing on a Sunday morning. A snowstorm had just hit our city and usually this would mean a day indoors in our PJs. However, this Sunday it was going to be different – very different. We were going to brave the wintery weather conditions and take Nikki swimming at Aqua-Tots Swim School in Burlington.

Nikki sprung out of bed excited as she has been waiting to check out the new location for months. But with battling colds and a very busy holiday schedule it was not possible until now. Therefore, we were not going to let some winter weather stop us from checking it out.

We bundled up in our winter gear and slowly made our way to Burlington. The drive was nice as we got to see a different part of Burlington that we haven’t seen before. When we arrived at the Activity Plex where Aqua-Tots Swim School is located, we did not know what to expect since we have been away from the swimming scene for months.

First Impressions

They say first impressions are everything and they truly are. As soon as we opened the doors to Aqua-Tots Swim School, we fell in love with it. It felt like home.

We walked in and were quickly greeted by the friendly staff who gave us our first tour of the new facility. Many of our favourites such as the play area, comfy seating, and dressing rooms have carried into the new location. We loved the open space and great design. Of course we couldn’t expect anything else from the Aqua-Tots Swim Schools brand.

We were amazed by how stunning everything was. From the design, layout, colours to the friendly staff – it was Aqua-Tastic!

Family Friendly Top Priority

Of course, there is no denying that Aqua-Tots Swim Schools is family-orientated, focused and friendly. Every detail in the swim school has family in mind and that is evident with the baby protection seats in their changing rooms (let the koala seat sticker on the doors in the family change area be your guide). There are also cubbies and lockers available to place your items in while your child swims.

The layout is family friendly too with the entrance to the pool on one side of the change room and the exit being right in the change room area – brilliant!

Did I mention that the facilities are very clean?! Being a family friendly environment, cleanliness is important and they deliver exceptionally.

Swimming Class

Once we absorbed the facility it was time for swimming! Nikki was anxious and couldn’t wait to try the new pool. Since the swim program is the same throughout all Aqua-Tots schools, we knew the drill. 😉

The swim instructor called out the children’s names and took them in. They took a quick shower before entering the pool and the class began. It was amazing to see that Nikki didn’t miss a beat and it appeared that no time went missing as she completed each lesson with ease.

At the end of the class a very excited Nikki greeted us at the exit and instructor informed us of how it went. Nikki did well with only a few areas that need to be worked on but above all it was a great class.

#MelAndNikkiReview

The time has come to evaluate our overall experience and it shouldn’t come to a surprise that Aqua-Tots Swim Schools in Burlington surpassed our expectation.

The facility in itself is stunning and you can tell that a lot of time, designing and love went into creating it for families to enjoy. We love how family friendly the facility is and they didn’t miss a beat to ensure that the swim lessons are top notch for children.

There are many swim schools available but none offer the feeling of family and belonging. Nikki was so excited that the staff cared to remember her name and she felt like it was home to her. She was a bit nervous at first that this was a new location but when she felt like she belonged as soon as she walked through the doors, she knew it would be great. That is something that is hard to duplicate as you can’t clone a feeling that an establishment can give you. Aqua-Tots Swim Schools recognizes that and have ensured that this feeling is given to everyone who comes through their door.

Therefore, for this #MelAndNikkiReview, we give them 6 fins out of 5! Our first rating that has surpassed our system and it is much deserved.

Enrolment is ongoing and you can register anytime. If you would like to enroll your child with Aqua-Tots Swim School in Burlington, make sure to give them a call at (905) 331-3393 or email them at burlingtoninfo@aqua-tots.com.

Make sure to follow them on Facebook and Instagram for the latest updates and great tips!

Until next time…Happy Parenting!

Splash Into The New Year With Aqua-Tots Swim Schools

A New Year usually brings new goals and resolutions. We love setting goals for ourselves individually and as a family. It helps us stay focused and be better versions of ourselves (as best as we can be of course).

This year one of our goals is to continue swimming lessons for our daughter Nikki. We just love how it has equipped Nikki with confidence to become a safe swimmer, while having fun. We have to mention the reassurance it has provided to us as parents to know that Nikki will be ok in the water. This goal of ours is called “Splashy Fun” and Nikki loves it! Of course, we will be attending Aqua-Tots Swim Schools as they are truly the very best in the swim school industry.

Now with two locations in Ontario, Mississauga and a newly opened one in Burlington that we announced last Fall, you have some great options.

As a refresher, Aqua-Tots Swim Schools has almost 30 years of experience in teaching children life-long water safety skills. Their state-of-the-art heated pools are complimented by an engaging curriculum, which is especially designed to match each child’s life stage. Swim classes are offered to babies as young as four months old and all the way up to age 12.

The school also offers a unique opportunity for multiple siblings of various ages and swim abilities to take lessons within the same time frame. On-going progress reports are used to ensure that each child has the ability to learn and progress at a pace that is comfortable for each child.

Aqua-Tots Swim Schools is managed by parents; therefore, they understand the importance of a flexible schedule. This is why they offer perpetual enrolment, various plan options, a convenient make up class policy and great membership perks.

Bring a Friend on us

One of the perks that is happening this January at the Burlington location is the “Bring A Friend on Us.” It applies to all members who would like to bring a family member or friend with their baby, tot or school-age child to any class through the month. This is a fantastic way to get a friend or a family member to try out one swim class at no cost to them. Believe us, your friend will thank you later for introducing you to this great school.

Please note that to take advantage of this offer, the member would need to contact the school directly and in advance to ensure there is availability in the class in which they would like to participate in with their friend.

Sounds simple, doesn’t it?!

We will be checking out the new Burlington location this month and we can’t wait to give you all our full review, including an exclusive Nikki video of her experience. You don’t want to miss it later this month!

If you would like to start your New Year right with swim lessons for your child, click here.

We are excited to make a splash at Burlington and keep our “Splashy Fun Goal.”

Until next time…Happy Parenting!

Aqua-Tots Swim Schools Mississauga Is Like Family: Introducing Alannah

Aqua-Tots Swim Schools Mississauga is a great school to help teach your children the important skill of swimming. This is why this year (2018) we have partnered up with Aqua-Tots to bring informative pieces about what they offer to the amazing readers of Momma Braga.

This month we decided to get to know them a little better and this is why we interviewed Alannah, the General Manager of Aqua-Tots Swim Schools Mississauga.

1. Tel me a little bit about yourself.

My name is Alannah and I am the General Manager at Aqua-Tots Swim Schools Mississauga. I was a competitive swimmer for 13 years and became a swim coach and lifeguard for more than 10 years back in Montreal where I am from. Teaching swimming is a huge passion of mine and I love being in and around the water.

2. How long have you been with Aqua-Tots Swim School?

Aqua-Tots Mississauga has been open for over a year, and I was here from the very beginning…before there was water in the pool! I started as the Aquatic Manager for the first year where I ran the Aquatic Program and helped train all of our Water Safety Instructors and Deck Supervisors. As of January 1st, 2018, my role has changed, and I am now the General Manager! I love learning about this side of the business, and meeting all the new and recurring families on the other side of the pool glass.

3. What inspired you to get a position with Aqua-Tots Swim School?

Swimming is a huge passion of mine, and with a degree in Recreation Management, it seemed like the perfect mix of my two passions. Also, after meeting the owner of Aqua-Tots, Lisa Morlock, I fell in love with the whole idea, the curriculum and her vision of what she wanted to share with the community to improve the whole swimming lesson experience.

4. What do you love the best about your job?

There are several people and moments that really make me love what I do. The culmination of all these things truly make it feel like so much more than just a “job.” Sometimes it really feels like home. I love getting to teach children how to swim and see their smiles and pride when they achieve something that they thought they could not do. I love working with such a kind and professional team that makes everyone happy every day. I also really enjoy that I am always learning, whether it be about the business or new and exciting challenges and opportunities that arise to always keep me on my toes. I look forward to every day!

5. What has been your most memorable moment working at Aqua-Tots?

My memorable moments are always the same. No matter the child and no matter how long they have been swimming with us, my favourite part about teaching swimming is when a child gets released in the water and starts kicking and swimming on their own with so much confidence! This moment coincides with the parent’s reaction to this skill and the excitement surrounding their son or daughter being able to swim on their own whether it be two feet to one metre! Those moments will never get old.

6. What do you like best about the programs at Aqua-Tots?

Having taught lessons for other organizations, I can truly say that the curriculum at Aqua-Tots is very well put together and executed. We specialize in teaching young children who are just beginning to adjust to an aquatic environment, right up to age 12. Seeing the curriculum really click with children and watching their advancement in skill and confidence is greatly rewarding. Routine is important in the lives of children and we try our best to add this type of your weekly activities. The consistency of the instructors also helps as they get to know the kids and can really push them to what their abilities can be. I also love that in each level children can be in three different phases; Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced. This helps guide the instructors into pushing the children to their mastered skills for each level and keeps everyone progressing.

7. Why is teaching swimming to children important to you?

I grew up swimming and it just became a natural skill that I thought everyone knew. It only hit me when I went to a friend’s birthday pool party and realized that not everyone knew how to swim. I was so young at the time, but I remember it so vividly. I continued swimming competitively and eventually became a lifeguard. Throughout my lifeguarding years I never would have thought I would have to jump in so often for children and adult non-swimmers. Swimming is a life skill and is so important for many different reasons; mental health, physical health, social and personal goals, but it is mainly important to me from a safety perspective. Aqua-Tots Swim Schools is a great tool for children of all ages to get to their best swimming selves.

8. Anything else you would like to add?

Come check us out! Everyone who works here is helpful and smiling. We are always raising the bar to make it a great experience for our families.

Special thank you to Alannah for her time and allowing us to interview her for this special piece. Our daughter Nikki had the opportunity to have Alannah for one of her classes and Nikki really enjoyed learning from her. Therefore, we know how great she truly is and it is no surprise that she is now the General Manager of such an amazing swim school.

Alannah is a perfect example of how amazing and caring the staff are at Aqua-Tots Swim Schools. They truly care about teaching your child such an important skill and they treat everyone who visits their school as their family.

Swim With Santa Event Splashes With Joyous Spirit

We had the pleasure of attending the Swim with Santa event which was done by Aqua-Tots Swim School in Mississauga.

This was a member-exclusive event which was an all-ages and complimentary with the annual membership to the school. It is one of many great perks of registering at Aqua-Tots Swim Schools.

The event was on Saturday, December 2nd from 2pm to 4pm and we were excited to go, especially Nikki who just adores going to swim school.

We arrived a little early which gave us some time to settle. We couldn’t help notice how beautiful and festive the swim school was decorated. They did not miss a single detail, from the candy cane shaped balloons at the front entrance to the festive décor at each activity section.

Our first stop was to drop off our non-perishable food donations for the Mississauga Food Bank which Aqua-Tots Swim School was collecting. Nikki happily placed our donation in the box and we were ready to see what to do next!

Nikki of course sat right at the arts and crafts station as it was her opportunity to get creative before Santa arrived. Nikki made a snowman ornament, coloured an Ollie with Santa page, and made a snowman mask. She had a blast!

Santa soon arrived and Nikki was in disbelief that he made it all the way to her swim school. Nikki was awfully shy so she opted out to take a photo with Santa. However, the pool was open for the family swim and Nikki was very excited to swim with her daddy (my husband , Mike).

It was so wonderful to see them both go into the swimming pool and Nikki showing her daddy all the skills that she has learned during swim class. They had such a wonderful time swimming together and Santa even made an appearance on deck to say hello to all the children with their families (please note that Santa did not go in the swimming pool, hehe).  Even though I was only a spectator, I couldn’t help feel the joyous spirit with the Christmas music playing in the background and watching all the families having so much fun. There was a holiday story corner where you can hear your favourite holiday story, a festive photo booth with props to capture your moment at the event and there was also a relay game where you need to help Santa deliver his gifts. All of these activities combined made it such an amazing event.

Not only did this event encompass all the fun from the holidays but it captured the spirit! Aqua-Tots Swim Schools showed the true spirit of the season by collecting non-perishable food items for the Mississauga Food Bank and they were also selling Ollie ornaments (Ollie is their official Otter mascot and the ornaments were created by one of the staff members – talk about talent!) which proceeds from the sale was benefiting Big Brothers Big Sisters Charity. The true spirit of the season is giving and that is exactly what Aqua-Tots Swim Schools was doing on this fine Saturday afternoon.

Of course we had to purchase one and we have proudly hung it on our tree at home.

Above all, we had an amazing time at this very special event. We enjoyed every piece of it and the best take away for us was doing it together as a family. As we left the event, my husband turned to me and said that this was the best afternoon! He got to spend some real quality time with Nikki and this is everything that he ever wanted. Hearing that made my day as it was so nice to see them bond as my husband works different shifts and sometimes long hours so quality time is hard to do. This event gave that opportunity and it was just so much fun!

Remember that if you are looking to enroll your child in a swimming school, Aqua-Tots Swim Schools would be a great choice as they offer these types of events that really bring the community together.
