In the lush, volcanic landscape of the Azores, a Portuguese archipelago in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, a sweet bread known as Bolos Levedos has been delighting locals and visitors alike for centuries. This traditional dish, with its soft, slightly sweet dough, is a staple of Azorean cuisine and has a history as rich as its flavor.
This is one of my ultimate favorites to eat and makes one sweet treat! 😉
The History and Origin of Bolos Levedos
The story of Bolos Levedos begins in the 19th century in the Furnas Valley of São Miguel, the largest island in the Azores. The bakers of Furnas, taking advantage of the natural geothermal heat from the region’s volcanic boilers, began producing this yeast dough delicacy. The unique environment provided the perfect conditions for the dough to rise, giving Bolos Levedos their distinctive fluffy texture.
As Azorean immigrants traveled to places like New England, they brought their culinary traditions with them, introducing Bolos Levedos to a wider audience. Today, these muffins are a beloved part of the Azorean diaspora’s cuisine and can be found in Portuguese communities around the world.
One of my favorite shops to visit to get them from is Tavora Foods.
