Leaf It to Dot | Book Review

“When Dot goes on a scouting trip with Dad, her tablet helps her spot incredible things – but it’s awesome to see nature with her own eyes, too.”

Synopsis

Dot and her dad are on a Rangeroo Scavenger Hunt with her best friend, Hal, and her dog, Scratch. Dad loves being outdoors with the trees, birds, and fresh air. Dot loves looking things up on her tablet. When Dad sees an owl flying by or spots moose tracks, Dot has her eyes on her screen and misses them. But she’s a wiz at using photo recognition to ID them and check them off her scavenger hunt list! Maybe old-school hunting plus tech-savvy skills make a winning team?

#MelAndNikkiReview

Leaf It to Dot is a great book for young readers learning to read. This book is classified at a level 2 and it is recommended for children ages five to eight.

Loved the storyline and how old-school was mixed in with new-school. The lesson here is that both can work together to achieve a great outcome. I loved how the book had chapters which to me is a great introduction for new readers. The story flowed nicely; it was easy to read; and the illustrations were perfect. Overall, it was a very enjoyable read and perfect for that new reader in your home.

Therefore, for this #MelAndNikkiReview we give it 5 hoots out of 5! If you would like to purchase a copy for your young reader, click here.

Animalicious | Book Review

“A delightful children’s book on the alphabet with some very unique animals.” – Momma Braga

Synopsis

From A is for Anonymouse and I is for Incredibull, to K is for Kangarude and R is for Rocktopus, this ABC book will have readers laughing out loud as they learn the alphabet with animals they may never have seen — or even heard of — before.

#MelAndNikkiReview

“The world is full of animals of every single kind. This book contains some special ones that you won’t often find.”

Animalicious offers us a creative and unique world of some very special animals. You can’t help but giggle along as you meet some of them in the story such as the Vamoose (HeHe). Nikki helped read along by telling me what letter of the alphabet we are on next. Then I got the fun part and try to pronounce some of the unique creatures such as the Macawbre (Tip: I read the books before reading it to my daughter. This way I always sound smart!). 😉

We just adored this book as Nikki got to practice her letter recognition and we got to giggle along together. This was such a creative way to teach the alphabet and we loved it! We also loved the illustrations as it really allowed us to understand the creature so much better! 🙂

Therefore, for this #MelAndNikkiReview, we give it 10 “Grabbits” out of 5! This book is recommended for children ages four to six. If you would like to purchase a copy, please click here.

“This is my favorite ABC book! I love all the animals.” – Nikki, Age 4

Short, repetitive lines and gentle addition and subtraction will make a splash with new and early readers.

#MelAndNikkiReview

We love the Peg and Cat TV series; therefore, it was exciting to read this book and have Nikki try to read along. We loved the simple story lines, short sentences, repeated words and phrases which helped Nikki learn to read. Also loved the math concept in the story too as Nikki really enjoys math. You can say that it was the perfect book at the perfect time for us. 🙂

This book has made a delightful splash into our reading line-up but best of all it is a book that Nikki can read on her own. Maisy’s Series | Book Reviews

Maisy is a beloved mouse that has many adventures and you can follow along in many of her books. We got a chance to review three from the series and are excited to share them with all our readers in our #MelAndNikkiReview!

Synopsis

Maisy’s Farm

Maisy and her friends are headed to the farm! Join her as she drives a tractor through the fields, gathers eggs from the henhouse, and milks a cow. But the farmyard fun doesn’t stop there: a pop-up play scene at the back of the book has press-out pieces of Maisy, Cyril, and their new farm animal friends, along with a red barn awaiting hours of play as little ones imagine life on the farm.

Maisy’s at Home: A First Words Book

Wondering what toys Maisy likes to play with at home? Just look for the tab that shows a puzzle piece and turn straight to the page. Who are Maisy’s favorite pets? Find the tab with a fish on it and discover some animals both expected and surprising. From Maisy’s living room (look out for the cactus!) to her bathroom, whether she’s eating or making music or dressing up, the names and pictures of things in Maisy’s house will be delightfully familiar to little readers.

Maisy’s Day Out: A First Words Book

What kinds of things does Maisy see when she goes outside? Turn the tab with a soccer ball on it to find the park, with swings and a skateboard. The tab with a chicken on it takes you to Maisy’s favorite farm, with a horse, a sheep, and more. There’s so much to explore on the beach and in the sea, on sunny days and rainy ones, on trains and in fire engines and all sorts of things that go. Naming everyday things is always more fun with Maisy leading the way!

#MelAndNikkiReview

The Maisy series is always an adorable read and a learning opportunity for your little ones. These three mentioned above are no exception as each story offers a child the chance to learn while on the latest Maisy journey.

The hard books are amazing for little ones to hold and they do not get bent or ruined (always a bonus in my books). The illustrations are adorable and the stories are just as great. We especially love the feature of the tabs – so amazing!

Therefore, we are rating the series 5 stars out of 5!

Any of these books would make a great addition to your little one’s library and reading line-up. If you would like to purchase any of the books mentioned above, please click on the links below.

Soccer School Series | Book Reviews

A perfect series for the soccer fan in your life!

Synopsis

Soccer School Season 1: Where Soccer Explains (Rules) the World

Coaches (and authors) Alex Bellos and Ben Lyttleton cleverly use the lens of soccer to immerse kids in math, geography, biology, and more. Loaded with awesome true stories and science, the first book in the Soccer School series is illustrated throughout with cartoons that will have young soccer fans laughing out loud. Quizzes at the end of each chapter keeps readers on their toes as they learn some truly weird trivia, like the hidden meaning behind a team’s uniform colors, how you might play soccer on Mars, or even the most opportune time for players to go to the bathroom. Entertaining and informative, this book is sure to score a goal with soccer fanatics everywhere (when they’re not on the field, of course).

Soccer School Season 2: Where Soccer Explains (Saves) the World

Soccer School is back in session and ready to defend its goal: to explain the world through soccer.

Coaches Alex Bellos and Ben Lyttleton return with even more proof that soccer can be used to teach kids about pretty much anything. The second book in their funny, fascinating series is full of facts about the most popular sport in the world, from history to language, design to psychology. When did women begin playing soccer? Why do lefties have an advantage on the field? Which soccer stadium was built in the shape of a crocodile? Perfect for soccer players, fans, or just plain curious kids, this series is packed with information and amusement in equal measure. Goal!

Soccer School Season 3: Where Soccer Explains (Tackles) the World

This third book in the Soccer School series poses many intriguing questions for soccer fans: What color are Cristiano Ronaldo’s pajamas? How many bones are there in the human foot? And why is that dodo alive and kicking? With funny cartoons and multiple-choice quizzes, this is the perfect way for young fans to learn how to score with their head. Coaches Alex Bellos and Ben Lyttleton kick off another season of Soccer School in this book packed with awesome true stories, real science, and fascinating facts. At this school, everything is about soccer!

#MelAndNikkiReview

Now I might be a little bias on this series as I use to play soccer as a kid and love the sport. Therefore, it is no surprise that I loved all three books in the series. What was most appealing in all three books is the ability to tie in the sport with other subjects and vice versa. The skills learned in sports can be applied to every day life and I love how each books reflects on that. It is really brilliantly written – bravo!

It is relatable and fun to read. The illustrations in all three books really tie everything in nicely and is a valued touch. Each book contains facts, quizzes and offers so much knowledge for a young reader. So much to learn in each book and your young reader will love each book as much as the next.

Therefore, for this #MelAndNikkiReview, we are rating the series and we give it 5 penalty kicks out of 5! 😉

These books are ideal for children between the ages of seven and 10. If you would like to purchase any of these books click on the links below.

Believe A Pop-Up Book Of Possibilities

“A pop-up book showing and reminding us of the possibilities.” – Momma Braga

Synopsis

All of life’s wonderful possibilities are just a page turn away in this elegant, inspirational pop-up book from master paper artist Robert Sabuda. Inspiring words accompany six striking pop-up spreads, making this book the ideal graduation gift for kindergartner and college student alike. Celebrate life’s journeys while looking forward to bright new horizons.

#MelAndNikkiReview

A pop-up book of this elegance is a first for us on the #MelAndNikkiReview and we feel so honored to have been able to review it. Each page is breathtaking and the phrases are inspirational. We just loved this book very much that we highly recommend it to all.

We give Believe A Pop-Up Book of Possibilities 10 stars out of 5! It is innovative, inspiring and simply breath taking. It is recommended for children ages five to eight but as we mentioned previously, it would be great for anyone.

We received a Q&A that was done with the author, Robert Sabuda that we are sharing some of it as we loved getting the authors perspective.

Believe is not only a beautiful book physically; it also contains a multitude of beautiful and inspiring sentiments. What inspired you to share this hopeful message?

“There have been countless times when I wasn’t sure I could overcome life’s challenges. I hope that Believe will remind readers that they’re not alone and to continue forging ahead through life.”

Throughout the book, the theme of possibility is evoked when an image, like an acorn or a paper airplane, is followed by a 3-D pop up of what that thing could be, like a towering tree or a rocket soaring upward. How did you develop the text and visual pairings to communicate this message?

“When faced with a challenge, I sometimes feel kind of small – but hopefully not for long! I understand and recognize that life can be a little scary when you feel small. Being able to visualize yourself into something bigger, something better, really appeals to me. The ideas just seemed to flow out of me when I remembered what it was like to feel small and then how great it felt to move on and become big again.”

What do you love the most about being an artist, author, and paper engineer?

“I love the fact that I’m a bookmaker and that the creative fruits of my labor can be shared by millions!”

“Tag along for family fun with Peppa!”

Synopsis

Everyone is gathering at Peppa Pig’s house for a family reunion!

It’s time for Peppa’s family to get together, and Grandpa and Granny Pig are the first to arrive. Once Auntie Pig, Uncle Pig, Cousin Chloe, and Baby Alexander show up, the whole family is there. #MelAndNikkiReview

We are Peppa Pig fans so it is no surprise that we loved this book! Peppa Pig and the Family Reunion has all the beloved characters from Peppa Pig and a few more from the family. We loved the importance of spending time with family that the story tells. A message that we hold dear to our hearts ourselves.

I haven’t been to many family reunions; however, Peppa Pig’s family sure knows how to do one that is super fun! Makes me want to join their party myself. 😉

Since Nikki is a huge Peppa Pig fan, I sat down with her to really get her thoughts on the book and this is what she had to say.

Emily Windsnap and the Pirate Prince | Book Review

“An exciting new adventure starring half-mermaid, half-girl Emily Windsnap!”

Synopsis

Traveling home by cruise ship should be a relaxing break after Emily’s last adventure, but things take a turn when the ship is overtaken by a pirate king and his crew. After the pirates collect everyone’s riches, they steal something even more valuable: Aaron, Emily’s boyfriend. The pirate king’s eldest son takes Aaron captive, forcing him to help guide the pirates to the legendary Trident’s Treasure. So Emily dives into action and joins the younger son’s crew in hopes of saving Aaron.

But while experiencing life on the waves, Emily is surprised to find herself not only enjoying the pirate life, but actually bonding with the crew – especially Sam, the pirate king’s son. Between helping Sam unravel riddles to beat his brother to the treasure and making sure that her friends are safe, Emily realizes that she needs to be true to herself. Will she cast aside her mermaid life to join her new friends, or will she find a way to follow her own path?

#MelAndNikkiReview

I am in love with this latest Emily Windsnap adventure in this charming series. Emily Windsnap and the Pirate Prince is such a great book! It offers young readers the perfect balance of adventure, fantasy, mystery and a dash of romance. This would be a book I would have definitely be reading in middle school.

The characters are all intriguing and the storyline is just amazing. I love how this adventure empowers Emily and it is such an important message for young girls to read (don’t want to spoil it so you will have to read it!). 😉

“From now on, I would be myself, and if anyone didn’t like it – well, that was for them to deal with, not me.” – Emily

I have become a fan of #EmilyWindsnap and am now going to try to read the other books in the series. We recommend this book for ages eight to 12 or if you just like a great fantasy book filled with mermaids, pirates, adventure and a bit of romance.
