From Boredom to Bifanas: How One Creator Sparked a Portuguese Culinary Renaissance

In a world saturated with food content, it takes something truly special to stand out. For one creator, what began as a pandemic pastime quickly evolved into a heartfelt mission: to preserve, modernize, and celebrate the rich tapestry of Portuguese cuisine. Through cookbooks, videos, and a growing line of cultural products, this journey has become more than just about food—it’s about identity, family, and community.

We had the honor to interview with David Rodrigues of How To Cook Portuguese Stuff.

A Channel Born from Boredom, Fueled by Heritage

When I first started the channel, it was out of pure boredom during early pandemic days… But one day I posted a Bifana recipe, and it just blew up.
~ David Rodrigues

1. Your cookbook beautifully celebrates Portuguese culinary traditions—what inspired you to begin documenting these recipes, and was there a particular dish or moment that sparked the idea?

When I first started the channel, it was out of pure boredom during early pandemic days. And back then, I was cooking everything from Italian, to Asian, Mexican, just whatever. But one day I posted a Bifana recipe, and it just blew up. Back then there weren’t many Portuguese food channels. A few, but not many. Definitely not in a more modern style. So it kind of just took off and then I knew Portuguese food was going to be my lane.

That viral moment wasn’t just a fluke; it was a calling.

Balancing Tradition and Today’s Kitchen

I normally cook the way I saw growing up… But I’ve also learned a lot from the Acorean crowd along the way.
~ David Rodrigues

2. Portuguese cuisine is rich in history and regional nuance. How do you approach balancing authenticity with accessibility for readers who may be new to these flavors?

It’s definitely nuanced in the regional variations of EVERY single dish. People will be very quick to call that out, but I try my best to represent everyone. I normally cook the way I saw growing up, which was in a mainland/Lisbon family. But I’ve also learned alot from the Acorean crowd along the way. I just definitely always want to provide an easy and accessible way for people to make these meals. If I can find a shortcut, or an easier way of doing something, I’ll always suggest it. I know this generation is always on the move, so if I can find a way to make these recipes something that can be whipped up after work, thats a win.

It’s a delicate dance between authenticity and accessibility, and one that David navigates with care and creativity.

Stories That Stir the Soul

People who, on their death beds, watched my videos to get a laugh in their worst days… Or kids that learned Portuguese because they thought my videos were funny.
~ David Rodrigues

3. You’ve built a vibrant platform around your cookbooks and products. What has been the most surprising or rewarding feedback you’ve received from your readers or community?

There’s been so many surprises along the way that have blown me away. I had 400 people at a book signing in Fall River, in the middle of winter, and a work night. And some of those people drove 3 hours to come meet me. That was a crazy experience. But then there’s also the heart warming stories. People who, on their death beds, watched my videos to get a laugh in their worst days. Or kids that learned Portuguese because they thought my videos were funny. There’s so much negativity on social media, but buried in all that, are amazing stories like that.

The impact goes far beyond the kitchen. From packed book signings to deeply personal messages, David’s work has touched lives in profound ways.

The Juggle of Family and Entrepreneurship

With 2 kids now, it’s very hard to find time… But I hope what they get from this is that entrepreneurship attitude and drive.
~ David Rodrigues

4. As a parent, entrepreneur, and author, how do you manage to juggle the demands of family life with the creative and logistical challenges of running your brand?

This was 100% easier to do before kids (hahaha). With 1 kid it became challenging. With 2 kids now, it’s very hard to find time to film content, edit videos, promote content all while being a dad. I used to travel a lot more for events, but these days, I don’t really always want to leave the kids. But I hope what they get from this is that entrepreneurship attitude and drive, because they see my wife and I literally making boxes, packing them, taping them, storing them, going to USPS, and filming. We keep everything done in-house, and they get to see the whole process.

Running a brand while raising a family is no small feat. Yet, David and his spouse have built a business that’s not only successful but deeply rooted in their home life.

A Journey of Saudades and Self-Discovery

Growing up in a Portuguese community is a special experience… You leave and you crave the culture. Saudades you know.
~ David Rodrigues

5. Can you share a bit about your personal journey—where you’re from, what led you to this culinary path, and how your heritage has shaped your work?

I was born in New Jersey, and moved to Florida after I got married. Once I got here, I was in a zone where you just couldn’t find Portuguese food. You still can’t really, it’s easier now, but still not what its like growing up in a Portuguese community. So I quickly had to learn to replicate these recipes. At first it was a lot of asking my mom, or watching older Portuguese women online making things. After time, I just really got comfortable in the kitchen and this was coming natural to me. Growing up in a Portuguese community is a special experience, even if we don’t realize it when we’re in it.  You leave and you crave the culture. Saudades you know.

It’s a journey of rediscovery, driven by love and nostalgia.

More Than Recipes: Products That Speak the Culture

Those ‘Come e Cala-te’ napkins are such a hit around Christmas… It’s cool to know I’m in all these homes.
~ David Rodrigues

6. Beyond recipes, your site includes products like cocktail napkins and shirts. How do these items reflect the spirit of Portuguese culture, and what role do they play in your overall vision?

I try to put products out there that are different then the norm. There’s thousands of “I’m not yelling I’m Portuguese” type products out there, so I try to create things that are different, but very relatable. Those “Come e Cala-te” napkins are such a hit around Christmas, and it’s cool to know I’m in all these homes.

These items aren’t just merchandise—they’re conversation starters, memory triggers, and pieces of Portuguese pride that find their way into homes around the world. I think I need some!

A Dish That Says It All

That second book has ‘Sapateira Recheada’… My parents, sister, wife—we all absolutely love it.

7. If you could cook one meal that captures the essence of your cookbook and your personality, what would it be—and who would you invite to share it with you?

I think the first book is like the initial journey getting comfortable with Portuguese food. The second books is like the cherry on top once you’re comfortable in a Portuguese kitchen. That second book has “Sapateira Recheada” (Stuffed Crab), which is that one dish my whole family can bond over. My parents, sister, wife –  we all absolutely love it. So to me that one really represents our regional roots, and my upbringing. I would share it with all of them, and I do wherever I go back home!

If one dish could encapsulate the essence of this journey, it’s Stuffed Crab. Rich, communal, and deeply rooted in family tradition, it’s the kind of meal that brings generations together.
