A Spread of Memories: Why Peanut Butter Means So Much
Every January 24th, we honour a pantry staple that’s more than just a spread—it’s a symbol of comfort, connection, and culinary creativity. For me, National Peanut Butter Day is more than a food holiday. It’s a memory of my grandmother in Portugal, who adored Canadian peanut butter so much that my mom would send jars across the ocean. It’s the taste of kindergarten afternoons in the 1980s, when crackers topped with peanut butter and banana slices felt like the best treat in the world.

Peanut butter, in its creamy simplicity, has a way of sticking to our hearts.
A Brief History of Peanut Butter
Though peanuts were ground into pastes by the Aztecs and Incas as early as 1000 BC, the peanut butter we know today began to take shape in the late 19th century. Canadian Marcellus Gilmore Edson patented a peanut paste in 1884, followed by American innovations that made it smoother and more shelf-stable.
National Peanut Butter Day itself doesn’t have a single founder, but it emerged as a grassroots celebration of this beloved spread. Since then, January 24th has become a day for recipes, reflections, and a whole lot of PB love.

Health Benefits: More Than Just a Tasty Treat
Peanut butter isn’t just delicious—it’s also packed with nutrients:
Protein Powerhouse
A great source of plant-based protein, ideal for growing kids and active adults.
Heart-Healthy Fats
Contains monounsaturated fats that support cardiovascular health.
Rich in Vitamins & Minerals
Offers magnesium, vitamin E, niacin, and folate.
Energy Boosting
Its calorie density makes it a smart snack for sustained energy.
Of course, moderation is key—especially with added sugars or oils in some commercial brands.
Allergies & Alternatives: Spreading Inclusivity
Peanut allergies are serious and can be life-threatening. As awareness has grown, especially in schools, many have shifted to peanut-free zones. Thankfully, there are delicious alternatives:
- Almond Butter which is made from almonds and has a taste profile that is slightly sweet and nutty.
- Sunflower Butter which is made from sunflower seeds and has a taste profile that is creamy and earthy.
- Soy Butter which is made from soybeans and has a taste profile that is smooth and mild.
- Wowbutter (Canadian!) which is made from toasted soy and has a taste profile that is peanut-like but is nut-free.
These options ensure everyone can enjoy a similar experience—without the risk.
A Canadian Classic with Global Reach
There’s something uniquely comforting about Canadian peanut butter. Maybe it’s the texture, the taste, or the memories it carries. For my grandmother, it was a taste of love from across the Atlantic. For me, it’s a reminder of home, of family, and of the joy found in the simplest things.

A Toast to Tradition
As we celebrate National Peanut Butter Day, let’s raise a spoon (or a cracker with banana!) to the memories that stick with us. Whether it’s a school snack, a care package across continents, or a quiet moment with a jar and a spoon, peanut butter has a way of nourishing more than just our bodies—it feeds our hearts.
So today, let’s honour the past, embrace the present, and keep spreading the love.

Until next time…Happy Parenting!
